Nick relives memorable season working for media team at Charlton Athletic
When UCFB Wembley student Nick Emms spent the 2018/19 season interning with the media department at Charlton Athletic, little did he know his season would end back at Wembley Stadium with the club winning promotion back to the Championship. We caught up with Nick, a BA (Hons) Multimedia Sports Journalism student, following the dramatic play-off win over Sunderland, about his time at the club and hopes for next season…
I was always confident in the result against Sunderland. I remember walking into the media office at one of the first games of the season and saying that the play-offs would be the best chance of going up this year. A few of the comms team disagreed and couldn’t see the club finishing anywhere near the top six with no money spent, so it shows what a good job Lee Bowyer has done and just how good the club can be.
When I first joined the club I always dreamed of two promotions in a row, meaning that we’d be in the Premier League when I graduate and I’d have done enough in two years to warrant a place on the team full time after UCFB! That dream is still well and truly alive due to the boys on the pitch.
Over the course of the season I’ve done DJ’ing at the stadium too, and helped out in the ticket office for the play-offs. I’ve tried to throw myself about and help them with whatever is needed. I suppose I could be called a jack of all trades but I am actually a media intern! It was the best possible end to the year. From studying in the stadium every day with UCFB to ending the year there with Charlton.
Hopefully in the future I’ll be able to say that during my time at UCFB I was an intern at a League One, Championship and soon to be Premier League club, but I won’t be getting ahead of myself. I’ve loved every moment here and can’t wait for the future. A special shout out to Tom and Olly who have taught me a lot and put a lot of faith in me this season. The club is all about community. Being here feels like I’m part of something special. I’ve been welcomed with open arms and have learnt so much in my first year. I’ve gone into everything with a positive attitude and this season has been as good off the pitch as it has on it. I cannot wait for next year, being an intern at a Championship club.
