The growth of the global sports industry in recent years has seen more and more jobs across varied sectors become available – perhaps no more so than in the use of stadiums. Where once a stadium was used every other week for a sporting fixture, now they are multi-purpose arenas hosting all manner of events.
Wembley Stadium, as well as being the home of the England team and FA Cup final, is now used regularly for NFL fixtures, the rugby league Challenge Cup final, boxing matches and numerous concerts throughout the summer months. Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium is being built to include a retractable pitch for NFL and concerts specifically – long gone are the days of a football-only arena.
UCFB student Bethany Parr, along with her classmates, studies the reasons why stadiums are now multi-purpose and a host of other issues on their BA (Hons) Stadium & Events Management programme.
Bethany states that her time on the programme so far has really opened her eyes to the wealth of jobs available in the industry and made her focus fully on her career goals following graduation. She has also particularly enjoyed taking Spanish lessons as part of UCFB’s unique Complementary Curriculum.
Her goal following graduation is to work within events management at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to help engage young people in cricket and progress the sport.
“I have always wanted to move into the sports industry and my thought was that being in a big city like London would mean more opportunities for me to get a job that I wanted. UCFB offered a course that no one else did as they focused on the stadium management alongside events management, so it was the right choice for me.”
